Synopsis: In The Lost Symbol, Robert Langdon is asked to give a lecture in the U.S. Capitol, but the evening turns strange when an object covered in five symbols turns up inside the building. It’s an ancient invitation into a hidden world of esoteric knowledge, and Langdon has one night to work out what it wants from him.
The invitation looks simple enough: a last-minute request for Robert Langdon to give a lecture in the U.S. Capitol Building. He arrives to find the hall empty and something else waiting in the Rotunda, an object carved with five symbols. Langdon recognizes it at once as a very old kind of summons, one that has been used to draw chosen people toward knowledge most of the world doesn’t know exists.
That discovery moves the story out of the lecture circuit and into Washington itself. Brown treats the capital as a puzzle box, with monuments, museums, and government buildings all concealing layers of symbolism that only make sense to someone who knows how to read them. Langdon has to work through those layers under pressure, since whoever sent the invitation wants him to follow the trail and is willing to force the issue.
The book is set almost entirely within a single night, so the pace stays tight even when the subject matter turns to Freemasonry, ancient mysteries, and the boundary between science and belief. The Lost Symbol also broke sales records at launch, which is part of why it’s still one of the most recognizable titles in the Langdon series.
