Synopsis: In Deception Point, NASA announces a discovery buried in the Arctic ice, and with an election coming, the timing looks almost too good. White House analyst Rachel Sexton is sent north to check the find and quickly realizes the evidence has been staged, which makes her a target for people who need that secret kept.
NASA badly needs a win. Then a satellite picks up something extraordinary beneath the Arctic ice, and the agency’s fortunes turn overnight, along with the space policy debate and the presidential race that hangs over it. With so much riding on the announcement, the President sends Rachel Sexton, an intelligence analyst, to the Milne Ice Shelf to confirm it’s real.
Rachel travels with a team of specialists, including the charismatic scientist Michael Tolland, and what they find on the ice points to careful staging rather than discovery. Before she can warn anyone, an assassin team, directed by a powerful figure working behind the scenes, comes after her and Michael.
From there the book is an escape story across glaciers and drifting ice, with a submarine rescue and a final confrontation aboard a research vessel off the coast of New Jersey.
Brown wrote this one before the Langdon books took over his career, and it shows a different side of him. It’s about government, science, and who gets to decide what the public is told, and the setting does most of the work: the Arctic is as dangerous as the people chasing the leads.
Notable: Dan Brown’s third novel and a standalone, so Robert Langdon doesn’t appear in it.
